RE: Buddy's car has MAJOR problems...
ok, so just try and drive it as much as possible to empty the gas tank? Should I pull the injectors and make sure those are ok? Also are the injectors from a 99.5 A4 the same in the 01 A4? I know they have different engine blocks, just wondering if the injectors are the same.

ORIGINAL: hiwords
check the ICM and ECT also. they aren't too expensive and easy to change

and i think onepoint8tee said in another thread the ect shouldn't cause a miss
also i would look at his maf, give it a good cleaning with electronics cleaner, or if you guys have someone in town with an 01, maybe yours would work too, but try swapping mafs
you might even try unplugging it and replugging it back in see if it drives/idels differently

Yep, I'm with the ECT theory as well. Easy swap and cheap part that can only help the situation. Examine the coilpacks when you do the plugs, too. They might need to be replaced or possibly at least some new electrolyte grease or whatever that stuff is.

I think your on the right track with trouble shooting, but it sounds to me that either your fuel filter is clogged or the fuel pump is struggling ( which will cause not enough fuel to get to engine and cause it to run lean )
its easy to replace the fuel filter ( and cheep ), do that first. if that doesn't fix it, i would get someone to check you fuel pressure. Hope this helps!
