Broken Timing Belt Question!

Broken Timing Belt Question!
Hi All,
Question. My friend has a 2000 A4 1.8t. She was driving on the highway doing like 65mph when the car suddenly shut off. Tried cranking and nothing. The car was then towed to a dealership and after them removing the valve cover noticed the belt was a little loose. Seems to me the tensioner broke!...
Now, the question I have is this... What are the chances that once the belt goes that the valves bent??.. Do you think I can get away with just changing the timing belt or is it nearly 100% that the valves hit?
Any help is appreciated!!
Thanks,
Chris

RE: Broken Timing Belt Question!
In my experience, the chances of valves not to be bent while the TB or tensioner breaks - none... I've actually bought my B5 with busted TB. Here are few pics, you'd get the idea:
And the head off in my garage (towed the car)
Here is the list of parts I've used to rebuild the car:
T-Belt Tensioner Damper
Timing Belt Tensioner
Timing Belt Roller
Timing Belt
Multi Rib Belt 1
Multi Rib Belt 2
V- Belt
Thermostat 87°C + seal ring
Water Pump
Cam Chain Tensioner Gasket Set
Turbo Exhaust Gasket
T-Belt Tensioner Bolt
Thermostat O-Ring
Cylinder Head Bolts
Fuel Injector Seals
Front Cam, Crank & Intermediate shaft seals
Alternator belt tensioner & roller assembly
OE A/C Compressor tensioner/roller assembly
Pentosin Lifetime Antifreeze, pink in color, (1.5 liters)
Cooling Flange (Located rear of cylinder head, AEB)
Cooling Flange (Sealer o-ring)
Coolant Sensor Retaining Clip
Turbo Oil Line Gasket-Lower
Turbo Oil Line Gasket-Uppe
OEM Turbo Mounting Bolts
Cylinder Head Gasket Set
Throttle Body Gasket
Cam Chain Tensioner Assembly
Dipstick tube Extension
NGK Spark Plugs (#BKR7E copper)
Mahle & Mann brand - Larger oil filter
Oil Cooler O-Ring
APR Snub Mount
OEM Coolant Temperature Sensor with O-Ring
OEM Diverter Valve, 225hp Audi TT
Radiator Fan Switch with Gasket (Middle Temperture)
Valves, stems, inserts…
Plugs
Some parts were preventative maintenance parts, but while everything was a part - just did it anyway...

RE: Broken Timing Belt Question!
Your engine just bent over and fucked itself in the ***. Look for a new head/internals and a giplantic turbo for a new begining... For your girlfiend.. Then youll want to be around her more and she'll think its because you like her.[&:]

RE: Broken Timing Belt Question!
With an interferance engine, when the timing belt breaks, most likely the valves will be bent. If the car has an automatic tranny, there may be a chance the valves are ok, if it is a manual, they are bent. With a auto, the tranny has no load when the belt snaps.
