Mine seat has recently done this, too (2003 1.8). I push it in but as soon as I sit into the seat, it pops back out. God forbid I do any adjustments as it pops out even quicker. I found one broken tab on floor, both are gone. I will try dealer for new clips to glue in or junk yard and pillage.

the lumbar support broke in my 98 a4 base on the drivers side. is this something that costs an arm and a leg to buy the repair parts or is it something that is a repairable broken sheer pin or something? i haven't gotten into breaking the clips yet to see inside

on the 98 leather seats ,if you carefully pry out the sides about a 1/4 inch with a wide putty knife and then pry down on the top it will pop out enough to see the plastic clips about 6 inches up from the bottom. reach inside and release the clips.the panel is cardboard covered in leather or ? so be gentle. the top lip is about 3/4inch long so pry and push down to get it to pop out. don't pull on the bottom, you will break the clips or damage the pannel
