Default B5 Upgrade Wish List

I've been reading these forums for a few weeks and learned a ton. Thanksto everyone for posting. What a great resource this forum is!

I have a 2001 A4 Sport, Tip, Quattrothat I'm starting to plow money into. I'm doing routine maintenance (timing belt, water pump etc)and thinking about upgrades. My K03 turbo is at the point of failure so I have a lot of thoughts running through my head right now.

I've decided to keep the car and I'm looking for some advice. I'm all stock right now......
[ol][*]Pondering the K04 upgrade...since I need to replace my K03 soon anyway. Is it worth it? I'm not that big into power, but I'm all for fun and like to accelerate. Never been toa track.[*]Also wondering the best software for a B5 A4. Does the chip/version matter much? I see a lot of GIAC and APRon other B5posters' sigs, but my mechanic is pushing Revo.[*]Exhaust upgrade. High-flow cat plus catback? Any opinions here?[*]I think I need a new DV, correct?[*]DoI need a boost gauge or fuel pressure gauge?[*]Am I missing anything thatI need to conside?[/ol]
Appreciate your input.

1 its a good low end torque monster but i dunno since u have 2001 theres no big injector file wit the K04 so u might not get the full potential

2 GIAC is the only one i kno of that has a good k04 program

3 if u want the full potential get a full exhuast system and a test pipe

4 yes

5 no but it might come in handly someday

6 a FMIC would be usefull

Panda,

Thanks for the quick reply. Yeah, I heard I might have to run a downgraded Revo file for the K03, even if I'm on the K04. So I would not really realize the full potential of the K04. That's a bummer.

this is a good time to put mods on then. you'll have a lot easier access to putting things on.

I've decided to keep the car and I'm looking for some advice. I'm all stock right now......

the k04 is nice. if you go with one of the aggressive files you will be plenty satisfied with the power. but the aggressive file is at the torque limit of the tip tranny. some say you might mess up your tranny, but a couple guys on audiworld are running aggressive k04 files on their tip tranny's and dont have any problems. its really recommended that you get a tip chip tho. the basic k04 file is pretty quick (its what i have right now) and i can stomp the local rice and a few modded cars, but you'll soon want more power (im going BT now)
2. Also wondering the best software for a B5 A4. Does the chip/version matter much? I see a lot of GIAC and APRon other B5posters' sigs, but my mechanic is pushing Revo.
the differences between the three is the powerband. they all give similar gains hp and tq wise. GIAC gives more power low end and then runs out of breath at higher rpms, APR gives moderate power down low but keeps boostin strong into the higher rpms. REVO is kinda like APR.

3. Exhaust upgrade. High-flow cat plus catback? Any opinions here?
https://www.audiforums.com/m_393146/tm.htm there's some sound clips in that thread. personally i like borla (if you end up getting a k04 dont get borla. get techtonics. its 2.5" instead of borla's 2.25" and it uses the borla mufflers. and if you live in a state without emissions get a test pipe. it adds more hp/tq than an exhaust. a lot cheaper too. but its illegal.
4.I think I need a new DV, correct?
if you chip it, it is recommended you upgrade your dv. the stock one will fail before long. 710n's are $80 and they'll do if your just chipping it, but you can get a slightly used forge 007 dv for ~90-100, and its metal instead of plastic and you'll never have to worry bout the dv again.
5.DoI need a boost gauge or fuel pressure gauge?
you dont need one, but if you want to know how much psi your pushin its good to have one. and you'll know if you have boost leaks.

hope this helps

i would strongly recomend a boost gauge. they can help you so much and tell you ifyou have leaks, of if you have aweak boost or anythingand they can be pretty cheap.

if you dont want to go APR $150 or AWE $250, then you can buy a simple gauge for like $60 and DIY.

Brian,
Thanks for the detailed reply. That does help a lot.

Brian/Panda,
I think this is the linkI need for the 170hp stock 2001 1.8T: http://www.revotechnik.com/products/....aspx?pvID=629. 3zero3 in Denver tunes with Revo. It looks like it adds 35HP and 70lbs of torque to the 2001 1.8T. I'll have to make sure this is the program they are talking about. They also mentioned that Revo has a better program for high-altitude driving. Have you heard of such a thing?
