Default awd?Intercooler?K 04?

I have a 1998 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro...the search dealy has answered many of my Q's...but I am still left with a couple...first would be, is my car all time awd, or is it some kinda positrac. deal where if traction is lost in front or back the opposite comes on?....second would be, I really like the look of the aftermarket front mount intercoolers, I was wondering if there are any sensors on the existing IC that I would need to worry about if i buy the IC piping kit and IC off of Ebay?....third question would be if I upgraded to a K O4, would that be a bolt on mod?...or would there be something more I would have to do?...

thanks!

1- yes its full time AWD but its a little different its funky set up but works amazingly well

2- No you dont have to worry about the sensor only 00 and up have them i believe, but don go cheap on the IC man

3- Yes its pretty much a Bolt on mod, you will need to have the ECU chipped to work with the K04 though

Thank you badluckaudi!...I looked at your pics...these cars have unbelievable roofs...I flipped my miata recently....http://www.freewebs.com/flippinmiata/memories.htm

So still a little confusion left on my plate...When you all time funky....what is the power distribution like?...I couldn't imagine it being equal f/r

about the intercooler...I was more worried about the sensor then anything else...I guess at the same time the question is....would you say the stock IC is sufficient for the stock turbo? and the same Q for the K 04?....

when you say chip....is this a plug and play deal, or is it a physical chip? (like a piggy back thing?) any chip in mind?...price or link would be appreciated, but just the manufacturer works as well....

thank you again!

for a k04 you need a fmic. for the chip, they have to remove your ecu and solder the chip to the board. any a4's under 2000 need the have the ecu removed. GIAC or APR are best I went with GIAC I think most uf us have.

the stock IC is good enough but a FMIC will give you nice gains.... with a K04 you dont NEED to upgrade IC's but a FMIC a good thing to have

Since you are B5 I highly reccomend GIAC since it is the most sgressive for our cars. Secondly if you go K04 you NEED a FMIC,an exhaust, and the larger injectors if you plan on going PC-16 from GIAC. I currently have the K04-15 PC and have an Ebay FMIC and custom exhaust with testpipe and am currently spiking at 24psi and holding at 19psi and my Ebay FMIC is just fine with no pressure drop. The best part about the Ebay FMIC and custom is exhaust that I only spent $900, which alone is the price of a name brand FMIC or exhaust.

Also check this link out for a cheap DIY FMIC --->

thank you all for your input...

I guess the first thing I am going to do is find a shop that I can take my ECU to, so that they can be blamed for any problems w/chippage(GIAC)....(I guess the question is...what kind of money did u guys spend on chipping the car...and will it run "chipped" until I get my K 04 and intercooler set up picked out...or should I do this all at the same time without driving during the intermittance?....)

Another question was...does changing out your stock bypass valve to an aftermarket DV help at all? (I heard they are alot more precise when it comes to dumping air(quicker than stock))...Besides that...does anyone know of a good (two in one) boost controll/turbo timer...hopefully in the 200-400$ range...

I love working on cars but I have only played with two turbos...I installed a ssq BOV on an STI...obviosly a walk in the park ...and I have rebuilt a t3/04(something aftermarket thing like that) in my friends mitsu GSX....

I think I am going to pull the motor and do a rebuild...and add some jazz...what does engine and tranny weigh?...I was thinking low 500's....

thank you guys again any and all info/advice given is definately appreciated...

tooxtreme8813(or I guess anyone)-what king of exhaust system are you running?...I was thinking of just bending some 2.5" and loosing the resig. and putting some euro looking thing on the back...my friend has an ac schnitser(spell?) can that he removed that I could prolly snag...and at the same time is anyone running an aftermarket turbo exhaust mani.? ( the ont on there doesn't look all that substantial...I figure if you fo with the k 04, although not all that much bigger, added cfm would prolly help alot...

and when you say bigger injectors....aftermarket...or out of the v6?...

currently spiking at 24psi and holding at 19psi- that sounds really high...I was thinking like maybe running 14psi...but I am also planning on doing some internal work....

you have 2 options. you can chip it now for 500 bucks and be running around 15-21 psi. and then get the k04 down the line. but u'll have to get new programming in order to run the k04. giac will give you a discount if you switch programming with them but you'll still have to pay again. the other option is leave the car stock until you get the k04 and get programming then. that way you only pay for it once. if i were you i would be looking into pc-16. its what im doing. or you can just go BT for a little extra cash and a lot more gains.

yes. as soon as you chip it you will need to change the dv. the stock dv cant handle the added boost and upgrading the dv is a good idea. some have used the stock dv for like 10,000 miles with the chip while others break within the first week. but its cheap and easy to DIY so i recommend doing it at the same time as chipping. boost controllers are a waste of money. you shouldn't add more air without adding more fuel. you will run lean and **** up the engine. you can get a chip with different programming settings and run stock for daily driving and then crank it up to the 93 octance program when your racing.

unless you go BT 2.5" exaust is best. if you do go BT then 3" exhaust is best. and ya bigger injectors means aftermarket. 310cc are what the pc-16 file requires. and you dont have to do any internal work on these engines. they come with forged internals stock and can hold more boost than you'll ever be running.
