Auto transmission fault
Firstly I would like to say hello to everyone and I have just joined. I bought my wife a 97 a4 last year and really like the car, but now its driving me mad!
The car starts off in 3 gear and stays there, if I move the shift to 1st gear it drives and I can then go to 2nd and 3rd but does not go into top.
My local garage says new box but the cost is just too high. I just wonder if theres a sensor problem? Can anyone help as I dont want to swap the car.
Thank you
Ian

RE: Auto transmission fault
Hi, first off is it an automatic transmission or is it a tiptronic transmission.
How many miles, and have anyone checked to see if the transmission fluid level is OK.
Find someone with a vagcom and scan the transmission for error codes.
Failing that, take it to a garage that specialized in Audi/VW, not your local garage.
Often, if there is a major fault with the transmission is goes into a safe mode and will stay in 3 or 4th gear. This is indicated on the later year cars by the transmission display Pixels lighting up the background.
If it is diagnosed that the transmission control unit is faulty, you can get replacements from salvage yards such as Shoksan or dads auto. Both sites specialize in Audi.

RE: Auto transmission fault
Thank you for the reply. The car as done 144k and the level as been checked. I like the car very much and its the first Audi we have owned.
I was told it could be reset? I have found a garage who says they will plug it in and have a look.
I have seen hand held reset tools on ebay are they worth buying? I would like to keep the car but today I also found sludge in the water tank and I bet thats going to be expensive, but the car drives fine and not missing a beat except for the auto box.

RE: Auto transmission fault
I thought it might be a head problem, Well its a good introduction to Audi. I will have a go and see if i can sort it. I have never worked on a Audi before so I will try to find out the cost of repair to the head gasket. Tomo I take the car to have a data test doe and see if the gearbox as gone in to safe mode. Is there a head sealer I can use? I dont really want to have the head off if I can help it.
Thanks
Ian
