Default Auto tranny problem!

My trannywas slippingin 4th and 5th gear, but the rest of the gears were fine. The other day i was driving and i had it on tiptronic riding in 3rd gear knewin that my 4th and 5th was slipping. Well at that point my check light came on and my numbers 1,2,3,4,5 on my tiptronic disappeared. and the R,N,D,4,3,2 came up and the back light turned red and i stopped my car. Well i turned it off and started back up, so that I could reset the tranny ecu or what ever it is. and it went back to normal for about 5 mins. </P>

But my question is, what should I do, or is my tranny is basicly screwed meaning that i have to rebuild the darn thing??</P>

Any kind of advice would help alot!</P>

Thanks!</P>

might want to have you tranny fluid checked for level - or replaced. How old is your car?

I agree with Brrman. Have your fluid checked, that would tell if it's burnt. How many miles is a good question. Don't rule out an electrical problem or the TCM (trans control module). I've been through one of those and can tell you that the TCM affects EVERYTHING regarding the trans. Firmness, shift schedules, what gears are available to you, etc....</P>

a NEW tranny or a used tranny? Used tiptronic (rebuilt) goes for around $2500. A new tranny? holy crap I don't even wanna guess.<edited><editID>brrman</editID><editDate>38104.0321412037</editDate></edited>
