Whenever you buy a used car, it is a crap shoot. You just have to minimize your risk .
Personally, as a buyer of a used Audi A4, I'm happy that it depreciated like a rock in the 4 years and 70K miles that the previous owner drove it. I researched the car, knew what I was getting into (fun, but it ain't Honda reliability), got a good deal and was psychologically ready to spend up to 2K for repairs/maintenance (so far 1200 including chip and timing belt etc).
As a middle aged guy with a good salary, but a big mortgage, 2 kids in private school and an ex-wife to support there is just no way I could afford a new Audi.
