RE: Audi A4 1.8t vs. Cobalt LS Cobalt wins somehow ?????
Stock cobalts are around 2600 lbs, a4 quattros run about 3300 lbs. i work with a guy who has a cobalt too. his is stick and mine it auto. im even chipped and he keeps up with me just fine. yeah thier running lower hp but thats not the problem. its called a power to weight ratio.
Numbers are based on both cars having manual transmission. Automatic is even heavier by about 100-150lbs.
Cobalts(not including 2007)run about 2681 lbs"coupe" with 148hp. This gives a 1 to 18.5 power to weight ratio. This means that for every 18.5 pounds of weight,it has1 horsepower. So for every 18.5 pounds of weight you remove, you will feel the effects of an additional 1 horsepower, although your actual peak horsepower will not change. Keep in mind, this is a FWD car. Just that much less stuff to turn that eats up hp.
TheB5(170hp v.) andB6 A4 Quattro however, runs at 3241 lbs(B5) and 3406 lbs (B6) both with 170hp. This gives a ratio of 1 to 19.1(B5) and 1 to 20(B6). Same scenario like with the Cobalt. Every 19.1 lbs(B5) - 20lbs (B6) your remove you feelthe effects of 1 hp.
My point is theres more weight too pull with the hp given on the A4 than there is on the Cobalt. So you wont start keeping up with, or even beating a cobalt until your around 200hp giving you a ratio of 17. Even then, your quattro with take even more hp with turn all 4 wheels. So youll need about 230hp with man. and 240-250hp with an automatic. Because an auto tranny eats up more hp than a manual. Most of that tranny hp loss is due to the torque converter.
One last thing id like to get straight too. Its not hp your looking for when your in a race like this....or even in an Quattro. Its torque. Torque is that thing you feel in your *** when put the hammer down. You need more torque to turn all 4 wheels. And with torque comes horsepower.

ORIGINAL: corvetteauto
My room mate has a 2006 Cobalt LS 5-Speed stock with 145 horse power and I have a 2004 Audi A4 1.8t Quattro 6-Speed with 170 horse power and some how his car beats my car till about 90 mph. Should i be the one beating him.I have raced him about 10 timesand his beats mine each time. I think there might be a leak in the stock blowoff valve because every time i shift it chirps, even when im not getting on it. I dont know if this would be affecting it or not. Yeah so im just wondering if his car should beat mine or not. I have been drivingand racing amanual car all my lifeso its def not my shifting.

There's an easy solution. Chip it, and new dv, and you'll beat him.
