RE: Anyone ever heard of....
It has been discussed before, I dont know if anyone was succesful at doing it, mainly because it wouldnt be cost effective, It would be cheaper to sell that car and buy another car that is already a manual..
why you thinking of this?

There is a guy in the 12 valve forum on audiworld named Miktip who's done it.

The only reason to do it is to say you've done it or you have lots of free time/money. I mean by the time you finished you coulda sold your car and bought a much much newer manual.

Cause as stated before, you'll end up dumping a boat load of cash into the car when you then coulda gone out and bought a 99 or 2000 for the same money. Plus if you ever want to sell the car you'll have to explain why carfax says its an auto and you modded it to be a manual. I don't see that being a selling point.

Yeah if you are already selling your car to get a new one... just get one that you want. Think about what you are saying... *slaps forehead*
Lets break this down. So say you're getting a good deal on this auto a4... that's super. BUT, you are obviously aware that this trans swap wouldn't be FREE... I mean a best case scenario, would probably be 1000 dollars (and that is never going to happen, even if you did the labour yourself, I doubt). So, now it gets simple... add that $1000 (more likely $2000+) to your budget... and buy a car that you want... with a manual trans from the factory.
