Default Another set of Newbie questions from a new standard driver…

The Audi is my first standard, so I have some probably stupid questions, but again I am not used to what is normal when driving stick. So my question is about shifting fast, when I shift fast and at higher RPM there is always a jerk when I shift the car, because I am letting off the clutch fast, rather than slow and smoothly like I normally would to make the shift not apparent. This jerk is totally normally right? And is one of the reasons standards are quicker than autos? It is my understanding that Autos are designed to shift smooth under almost all circumstances, which is one reason they are slower, so even if the car is floored and about to shift at redline it will still make the shift smooth with no jerk, unless you install a shift kit, which makes the shifts harsher but quicker.

I have also heard and correct me if I am wrong that these quick shifts are actually not that hard on your clutch/tranny because you are off the clutch quicker, but to me it just seems like the sudden shock to the drive train can’t be too good, does a snub mount help with this drive train shock/jerk? I am just wondering if it is normal/ok, I do not shift my Audi like this all the time, just once and a while when I feel like getting on it hard, and again I don’t know the norm for standard cars.

its normal to feel that jerk... as time goes by it should become a tad bit smoother but when shifting hard at red line your definately gonna feel a jerk.

and its not very good on the car at all... running to 6500rpm's is harsh on the tranny and poppin the clutch like that is not the best thing either... im not gonna say it will destroy the car but it will most likely take some life away from it in the long run.

I usually never shift at redline, I only have a few times in 1st and 2nd. I am talking about if I am flooring it in second and shift quickly from 2nd to 3rd at like 4.5-5k there is a jerk because I let the cluch out so fast, if I try to let it out slower then I am just back on the gas too fast and overrevving it before the cluch is all the way out which is worse.

you do not give enough gas when you let the clutch out that's why it's jearking.

ones you get used to rpm and clutch combination, it's going to be as smooth as silk.

Yeah, you'll get a little smoother with some practice.

If you jerk it to much it may blow. Just try to match the revs and the clutch release a little better. Smoother is definitely better, its hard on the tranny if its jerking around a lot.

Heh in my old car, i didnt even have to let my foot off the gas, just had to time the movment to the next gear with the clutch in and out perfectly, and it seemed fine.
