ALMOST lost the car last night... very long story
So I'm down in the school autoshop last night getting my motor ready rods and pistons and what not, its about 11pm, and we are just getting ready to grab some dinner. My car is sitting in there with no motor in it, my friend jetta is sitting in there not running do to a k26 turbo swap, and then the president of the off-road club, Dave, and another one of our friends Jed, were down there working on this toyota (Toto) truck.
I had my back to the truck and was working on my motor and they were torching the front of the truck and all of a sudden I hear Fire Fire, so im thinking eh, little fire, nothing new. i turn around and the truck and alot of stuff around it is on fire, with flames about 8-10ft high. I'm like oh fawk we're not putting this one out.
Then I run over to take a look and see there is a 5 gal gas can on the floor in the middle of it tipped over leaking out gas, the gas tank for Toto is just above the flames, as well as the fuel lines, two other gas tanks from another Toyota that another kid is building, a tank of welding gas and a welder are just about to catch fire, and the cutting tourch was still on. then I here Dave yell out out, so i thought he saw that the gas was gonna catch fire so me and Jed ran outside and my stomach dropped cause I realized everypenny and spare hr I had from the past 2.5yrs was gonna burn, and insurance would do nothing about that, besides the price of the car.
Then he yells no "I said put it out" So i grab one fire extinguisher, he grabs the other, he uses his and it didnt really do anything, i used mine and i think it was a different chemical cause it did a real good job, but i used the whole thing and there was still a good amt of fire. Dave grabbed the blanket that was really burning and ran it outside, and I grabbed some other burning rags, and jed was able to put the rest of the fire out with a hose.
Obviously campus safety showed up do to the huge amt of smoke coming off the top of the building (the autoshop is connected to the campus's maintenance dept, so alotta stuff woulda burned) and they took our info and everything else.
The damage, a bunch of electrical damage to welders, saws, the truck. Then a couple parts from the other Toyota like the fender got its paint melted off. Some of Toto's paint melted off, the rear view mirror melted, and then some other misc stuff burned, but luckily the shop and my car were saved.
It def made me realize how fast i could have lost everypenny and everything I invested in my car. insurance doesnt cover mods, that I know of, and they def dont cover time, so after that, I'm pretty much done modding. To much money that you can lose too fast.
Does anyone know or have any special insurance that you can have mods fully covered? Any info or anythign would be great!
MORAL:
Check you fire safety everyone! Our fire alarms didnt work, fire extinguishers were way out of date, and def need more than 2 down there, and we had no idea what to do in a fire situation. needless to say, me being the vice pres of the sports car club, and dave being the pres of the autoclub, we will def be going over a fire safety course with our members.
Anyways that was an entertaining night, spent a lotta time cleaning then drinking and finally getting back to my apt around 5am.
Also I'll get pics of progress and fire damage this afternoon
