Alarm System Problems (2001 A4 1.8t)
I don't know what's going on... help me guys!
I'm still getting used to my car so I'm not sure what is supposed to happen exactly.
Sometimes when I lock it with the remote the horn will beep once and the red LEDs on the inside door pannels will blink semi-slowly, however other times when I lock it the horn does not sound the LEDs strobe, but the car does actually lock. I'm pretty sure its only when the horn doesn't sound that my alarm will eventually go off (doesn't go off right away sometimes not at all and other times not for several hours). I don't get why its so irregular.
What does it mean when my horn doesn't sound upon pressing the lock button?
I should add I've never had anything in the car that would set off the motion sensors.

u have a turbo car.. what might happen is that u didnt give time for the turbos to stop spooling causing motion.. it happened 2 me the first couple times with my alarm system... let the engine run for about a minute before turning the car off.. thennnnn try to lock it.. it should be fine.. See usually upon locking the car there should be absolutely noooo movement whatsoever... obvioulsy it takes more than a little push for the actual alarm to go off... so the leds strobing is kind of a way of telling you "there was something wrong when you tried to lock it"... its in every anti-theft system.. but in most cars you never get that error because most cars are not turbo. And now 'Phroztbyt takes a bow'

And NOW, BFlan tells this even newer than me guy that he is waaay too full of himself. Every post I've seen from you has sounded a little on the arrogant side. Chill.
BTW, you haven't even said anything worth being arrogant about. Show us you know something, then maybe you can try the egotistic tip.

phroztbyt, you are so full of BS it's not funny.
The alarm system on the A4 doesn't have a shock sensor. It is an ultrasonic sensor that looks for motion inside the cabin area. If the horn doesn't sound then there is a door/hood/trunk sensor that isn't making contact. A common one is the sensor under the hood. It is a little guy with a rubber boot around it. They often are shaky. I suggest you get a vag-com and decrease the sensitivity of the interior ultrasonic sensor.

Hey thanks for the help guys. No need to jump down his throat though at least he was trying to help, nothing wrong with that.
The thing is sometimes no matter how much a try the horn won't sound should try opening and closing everything making sure its snug. I know my doors are a little stubborn when they shut so maybe one isn't closed the right way. I'm going to go play see what I can't find out...
Thanks again!

Update- After playing for a little bit I got some ideas...
I forgot to mention that my rear driverside door handle is slightly broken. You can't open the door from the inside, when you pull the latch the molding its on just pulls right out. (Sorry I forgot to mention this). Anyway I tried leaving that door open and locking it and while the horn didn't sound the LEDs didn't blink either when I locked it. I figured this meant the security system wasn't activated because the door was open. I closed it again and tried and it still doesn't work.... I'm thinking the car is sensing that the rear passenger door isn't closed right because it's broken. I still don't understand why the alarm goes off. Does that car go into an extra sensative mode if something isn't closed right?
I'm not sure if any of this helps...

hi i'm new to all this and i know that this post is rather old so not sure if i will get any response.
Any how i've got a 1998 A4 and i have the same problem as above, since i bought the car a few months ago the horn has never sounded when i lock it. I don't have the remote switchblade key, only the master regular key so i was wondering if you needed the remote to activate the alarm ? or if the alarm still actives with just the key ?
i will check out my door sensors later, by the way do you know where abouts the one under tho hood is?
thanks!

the horn failires is common and as long as the flashing LED comes on the system is armed (if it has an immobiliser) which most UK/European cars do, you could consider changing the alarm horn/piezo speaker

cheers for that, thats another idea...
just that i noticed yesterday once i locked the car that the red door led's flash really fast, i'm pretty sure that before they just 'blinked' every now and then, but i'm guesing from what was said above about the 'strobing' of the red door led's that this means there is something wrong with the alarm system, door sensors etc.
