My 96 does not have a low side port. I charged mine through the high side with liquid without the engine running.
This is dangerous, Do not try it unless your a Professional.

If you know a place that will do it right for $50 by all means get it done there. One of the charging stations that they have don't come cheap.

Connecting air conditioner service station on vehicles with no connection on low-pressure end of refrigerant circuit On the following vehicles, no service connection is provided for the air conditioner service station on the low-pressure end of the refrigerant circuit. Adapters are required for connecting the air conditioner service station to the refrigerant circuit of these vehicles. t Audi 80, Audi Cabrio, Audi Coupe t Audi A4 up to 07.96 t Audi 100/ Audi A6 up to 03.97 t Audi A8 up to 11.97 Note On vehicles with no or inaccessible connection at compressor, remove low-pressure switch for air conditioning system -F73- (jumper contacts in connector for low-pressure switch for air conditioning system -F73-) and screw adapter to this connection →Heating, air conditioning or →Air conditioning. Note t The tools listed below are commercially available or can be obtained from regional sales centre/importer. t Should it be necessary to measure pressures at switch connections on high-pressure end, make use of adapter from adapter set for refrigerant circuit -V.A.G 1785/9- and proceed in the same manner.

Connecting air conditioner service station with adapter set for refrigerant circuit -V.A.G 1786- to refrigerant circuit A- Connection with valve (small valve insert) on low-pressure end of refrigerant circuit B- Adapter with union nut -V.A.G 1786/1- C- Commercially available charging hose (short version with 5/8" thread on each end) D- Adapter with service connection -V.A.G 1786/2- (for connection of quick-release coupling of air conditioner service station -E-) Note t Assemble adapter and charging hose as shown and connect first to connection with valve -A-. t Adapter with union nut -V.A.G 1786/1- is only to be used at connections with “small” valve insert (standard for connection with valve for low-pressure switch for air conditioning system -F73- and also gradually introduced as of 10.94 at compressor). t Instead of adapter with union nut -V.A.G 1786/1-, use can also be made of adapter -V.A.G 1785/10- (remove valve from adapter -V.A.G 1785/10- or install valve opener in charging hose).
