A4 Starting Problem :-(
Good afternoon,
I was driving back home tonight when the car just died. The engine turns over, but does not start. I opened the lid over the fuel pump, and can hear it just fine, so I'm not so sure that is the problem. Since it was pretty late, I did not have a chance to check for spark, but will do it first thing tomorrow. I wanted to post tonight so I can hopefully have some ideas posted by the time I start tomorrow. I know this is a very general description, but I thought maybe this car has some kind of recurring issue. Any ideas or recommendations?
UPDATE - 12/02/07 1:09PM: I just took out the spark plugs and they are quite soaked in gas, so I believe gas pump is not the issue. Also checked compression, which is great. There is however, no spark on any one of the cylinders. Any suggestions?
UPDATE - 12/02/07 5:42PM: I just bought a code reader and found these:
Codes:
P0123 Throttle/Pedal Pos.Sensor A Circ High Input 16507
P0501 Vehicle Speed Sensor Range/Performance 16885
P1426 Tank Vent.Valve Open 17834
P1544 Throttle Actuation Potentiometer Signal too High 17952
BUT, please keep in mind that I did try to do some things to the car, so from yesterday to the time I checked the codes, I tried to crank the car with the airbox off, etc... One funny thing is that the TPS sensor does make a loud humming sound when the key goes to the ON position for about 20 seconds. Is this normal?
By the way, the car is a A4 1.8T manual tranny. Mods includes APR chip and k04 upgrade.
Thank you very much!

by recurring, I mean issues which are common with these cars. It does sound like it has compression, but I will check it either way. As far as the check engine light, this might sound like a silly question, but is the check engine light supposed to stay on after the key is in the ON position (engine not on), or is it supposed to light on then go off after a few seconds?

checking if the fuel pump is actually pumping is not enough. you have to check the line that is in the engine bay. then check for spark and try to start the car with the MAF unhooked. and yes the CEL is supposed to do what you described.

Get to autozone and borrow their obd2 scanner. My guess is either a crankshaft sensor or ICM. Normally bad ICM's will cause cyl 2 misfires, but it is possible it could keep all cyl's from firing.

The ICM was actually replaced a few months back since 2 cylinders were misfiring. Could the ICM cause ALL cylinders to not fire or would it just cause misfires?
