After further review...
There was no such thing as a 2001 Jetta GLI. The GLI debuted in 2002 as the Jetta GLI VR6. The GLI 1.8T wasn't available until the 2004 model year. That variant of the 1.8T gives 180hp at 5500 RPM and 173 lb/ft at 1950. The car weighs 3106, empty. As compared to a B7, which weighs 3549 empty, the A4 gives up almost nothing in hp/lb - the Jetta has 17.25, the B7 has 17.45. I couldn't find performance numbers for that car specifically, but... I did find a time slip for an '04 GLI that ran a 14.3 @ 99 with a GIAC Stage 1 chip. Also, the '04 GTI (hatchback) with the same 1.8T motor is spec'd at a 7.1 second 0-60, which is the same as the B7.
