Default 96 a4 versus 1997 a4

Hi
im asking for my japanese friend.
My friend has a 96 A4. he wants an intercooler from north america since they are asking over $USD 3000 for them in japan. i think neuspeed intercooler, whereas arp and neuspeed are about $us1000 here in canada. the problem is someone said A4's only came to north america starting in 1997 model year?

so i think my japanese friend has a 96 german model spec.

does anyone know if engine layout for a 1996 german spec a4 differs greatly from a 1997 north american spec a4?????
the local shops say they can supply an intercooler for a 1997 but they have no idea about 96's since they didnt come to north america this first year.
does anyone know?????
pls advise
thanks!
