Default 96' 2.8q Reading Check engine light!!! Resetable??

Hi,
my check engine light just came on. I do not own a audi maintanance manual. Could anyone:

- tell me if there is any way to manually read the error code
- give me a chart for error code keys
- tell me if there is any way to reset the check engine light

????????

Again, any help is greatly appreciated!!!

What you need to figure out what is setting off the light is a Vag-Com. There is no way to tell what your problem is. You can however go to autozone and have them pull a generic code for you. Once you get the code, bring it back and post it for us. We will then try to help you out as best we can.

You really should think about buying a vag-com from Ross-tech.com if you want to do any maintainance yourself.

Welcome. Jestnomen has the call on that one. As for the check engine light, it'll go out when you correct the problem. When you read the codes with the VAG-COM it gives you the option to erase the stored codes.

I got the code:
P0153 Oxygen sensor bank #2 sensor 1 slow response

Runs fine though.
I heared that bad quality gas might cause the sensor to clog up?
I thought 87 octane would be sufficient. I do not hear any knocking sound,

any input???

Your owners manual might say , using low octane fuel will only hurt performance. The knock sensor causes the computer to retard spark , and pressure relief valve ,if turbo, to open.

First off, how many miles do you have on your car? If your car has greater than 70k miles your Oxygen sensors may be starting to go bad.

Do not use 87 octane. Do not use 87 octane. Do not use 87 octane. Do not use 87 octane.

With that said, bank #2 is the drivers side pre-catalytic converter oxygen sensor. Depending on your year of your car and the engine size, a replacement o2 sensor is goign to run you 70-150 bucks. If you replace one side you should probably replace the other side also while your in there. You will probably see an increase in gas mileage also. Just because the car seems to run fine, doesn't mean it is. It could just be a fluke, and you may never see an error again. The choice is yours, but your car isn't going to explode (immediately).

They are pretty easy to change and autozone will loan you the tool to remove and install them. All you need is a ratchet set and a universal joint. Oh, one last thing. If you decide to install them yourself, do not be cheap and buy generic ones. They may cost 20 bucks, but they are not as reliable and tend to throw CEL's.

If you've got two, I'd replace them both. My 1.8t has an upstream and a downstream, the upstream was a pice of cake, you can get to it from the top without any trouble. The downstream was a different story. It wasn't really that hard to get out, just kind of hard to get to. I changed mine at about 70,000.

I wouldn't say anything that hasn't already been said - it's all good advice.... But I would repeat Jestnomen's advice:

Do not use 87 octane. Do not use 87 octane. Do not use 87 octane. Do not use 87 octane.
