Default 70k service

I'm going to take my car in for its 70k service next week any was wondering if there was anything super important I should have them look at or anything. I'm going have them check the timing belt, all the fluids and that stuff, change the oil, and fix the leak in my washer fluid tank([:'(]) I've only had my car since Oct and I don't think the previous owners took care of it as well as they should have.

Thanks

If you don't know any of the service history

1. Change the spark plugs (a DIY)
2. Change the air filter and cabin filter ( a DIY).
3. Have the brake lines flushed (every 2 years).
4. At 70K miles, your timing belt shoud be fine, unless you have an early model. It is not the timing belt that goes, but the tensioner. I believe the new tensioner is in the 99.5 and up years. I'd suggest changing the timing belt and tensioner etc at 80K miles. At that time you will change the antifreeze, etc.

5. Get a turkey baster and suck the power steering fluid out of the reservoir and replace it with fresh Pentosin 11S. Do not use anything else.
6. Change the gear fluid in the differentials and transmissions.
7 Invest in a Haynes manual (15 dollars)
8 Include year, model and engine and tranny typoe in your posts so that we can give more specific information relating to your car.

Thanks David. I have a 2001 A4 1.8t Quattro with Tip trans. I'm going to take my car to my mechanic because I really don't know **** about fixing my car and I'd rather just pay for it.

Thanks crazyhawk for that link!

Have the same question, bought a car 2003 1.8t manual about a month ago with 71000 miles on it. Carfax shows all service records till 50000 miles or so. Dont know if 70000 miles service has been done. Would go to the dealer probably next week. How much does it usually cost there 70000 miles service? Just to know a bulk part. Thanks.

There really isnt any way to check a timing belt, unless there is a maintenence record of it. Just do everything plus the waterpump and thermostat at 80k unless you have the cash now and want to get it over with.

The 70K service is just an oil change and a bunch of "Check this, check that", so that they can sharge you 400 dollars for an oil change.

However, if you don't know the service history of the car, change everything including all the filters, fluids, lubricants and gear oils. At least your car has a clean start on life with you.

"They", ie dealer will charge you an arm and a leg. Find a good mechanic who specializes in Audi or VW. They will only charge a leg.

If you don't know anything about cars, then now is a good time to learn about them. If you have a B5 model, buy a Haynes manual for 15 dollars at PEPboysand start buying some basic tools. (socket wrench, spark plug gapper, antisieze compound, allen wrench set, torque wrench). Spend an evening familiarizing yourself with where things are under the hood. Find a friend who works on his own car and invite him over to teach you how to change your spark plugs.

You will learn how to do some basic maintenance and save $$$. For instance, NGK platinum plugs are 50 dollars for 4. A garage would probably charge 50 dollars to install them. Your can do it yourself in 30 minutes. The cost would be a set of sockets (20 dollars), Torque wrench (15 dollars), antisieze compound (2 dollars), allen wrench set (5 dollars), spark plug gapper (2 dollars), Beer (6 dollars).

Cabin filter (15 dollars) Metric socket set (you already bought to change your spark plug). Time 5 minutes. Garage would charge 15 dollars labor.

Air filter (11 dollars). All you need are screw drivers and some patience as the screws that hold the heat shield on are difficult to access and sometimes are rusted
