2002 Audi A4 1.8TQ Keep or Trade
I am new to this forum and this is my 1st Audi. I have a 2002 A41.8TQ 5spd sedan w/ 99k mi. I purchased it new and have only used synthetic oil, done all scheduled maintenance at the dealer (great service), etc. I love the car, and it runs great (only hwy miles and I don't beat on it), but have had my share of reliability problems: A/C condenser & wiper motor at 59k, wiper arm @70k, steering rack @97k, wiper linkage @99k and am looking at a timing belt, 100k service, and a camshaft gasket repair at 100k (~$2500). My question is what sort of repairs should I expect once I go over 100k mi, does it start to get really expensive, and do Audi runs for 150-200k mi or should I cut and run? I am also looking at a new '07 2.0TQ 6spd sedan for $26k all done. How does the 2002 1.8TQ compare with the 2005-7 2.0TQ wrt reliability?
Thanks, Christopher

Well if you take care of your audi it'll definitely run to 200k. Oil changes are the most important determining factor in this, but there are other maintenance issues that will occur betw. 100-200k on your car...such as:
Wheel Bearing Replacement
CV Joint Replacement
Bad Bushings/other suspension issues such as control arms
You've replaced your 02 sensors right? They usually go for about 60-80k I think
as your car racks up the miles keeping the engine maintenance up to date will be key and you shouldn't really have any major problems. what you will incur is more along the lines of suspension/wheel probs. because the parts take a beating throughout the life of the car. if you're going to sell it at 100k I wouldn't wait any longer. Seems like people are much more obliged to purchase a car at 100k rather than 120k...
what's a camshaft gasket repair...and where is that gasket? you're not referring to the valve cover gasket are you?

Hi LarryB,
Thanks for the reply. You are right, it is the valve cover gasket that needs replacing (the dealer wants to charge me ~$800 for the work). I heard that the 1996-2001 A4s had problems with the front suspension, but haven't heard anything about the 2002-05 A4shaving the same problem. Also, the wiper linkage siezed on my '02. Do you know if the '07s use the same linkage design?
Thanks,
Christopher

You can do front cam seals at the same time as the timing belt.
I'm at 175K miles: My repairs have been
2 timing belts, water pumps, belts, cam seal changes.
1 MAF
1 Pre cat oxygen sensor
1 EVAP purge valve
1 1 front bearing
1 tie rod
1 control arm
flex joint in exhaust
K03 is starting to blow oil and cat converter is starting to die.
