2.8 quattro won't start and cutting out
Hey guys.
I have a 1997 A42.8 quattro. About2 months agowhen I tried to start it, she would start up then cut out instantly. 2-5 turns later she'd fire up and drive fine. Its done this occasionally over the last 2 months but this last week every time I slow down the revs drop right down and the car tries to cut out and most of the time does! This on top of the starting trouble.
I read through a similar post with the starting problem but his wasn't cutting out. He had the throttle body reset and it solved his problem.
Does anyone have any experience or advise on this problem?
P.s I have had a friend of mine mechanic take the car in and he couldn't get the fault code so there's no way I can!
Many thanks in advance

May be a dirty throttle body. However the only way to see what the problem may be is to pull the codes and see what is stored. Post them back here.

Run the VagCom on it. VagCom is software that allows you to read thecodes your car throws. but its costsa pretty penny if you dont have it. some people recommend bringing it to an autozone or sumthing like that.

Take it to autozone, theyll hook up to your OBD port under your dash by the drivers side door and scan for codes. If you are having problems like that, there SHOULD be a code stored that points you in the right direction. A bad engine coolant temp sensor can cause what you are describing.

That is if you are in the US...Autozone will scan the stored codes for gratis, hoping you will buy repair parts at their stores.
If you are not in the US, use the vagcom locator in the helpful links section to find someone near you who has a vagcom and will pull your codes for you. They usually ask for beer in return for the favor.

Thanks for all you reply's guys. Unfortunately I'm in UK so have to find a local specialist,
The engine temp sensor could be a possibility as I was getting some weird readings. My oil temp was going off the scale but oil didn't seem hot?

Do you have a Laptop? Yes - well go to autonostics.com and order the cable for your car, or go to ebay and get one from there - download the software from ross-tech.com and pull the codes yourself - cheaper than having a shop do it once
