1999 A4 quatro 1.8T , no boost?
This is my first post here. I just got a 1999 A4 quatro 1.8T automatic. It has 79000 miles. It seems very clean. When I drive it the engine is quiet and smooth. I am not familiar with how an A4 should drive, but I do not feal any turbo boost or hear any turbo whistle at any speeds or rpm. SHould i be feeling this. How can I tell if the turbo is bad, wouldnt it make noise? The check engine light is on. I will be sending it to my service dept soon, but wanted to hear if there was a way to check the turbo or if it could be something else .

I can feel the boost on my stock A4 every time I drive it. I can also hear the turbo whistle if I roll down the window. You should notice a big change in power right around 2500-3000. Below that its very sluggish.

Your RPM should raise slowly from 900 to 3000 then from 3000 raise very quickly to redline. If you roll down your window you should be able to hear the turbo spooling or a gushing sound from the air running through the turbo from 3000 to redline.

hahah i dont have to roll down the window. mine makes the loudest SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH with whistling noise. and my stock DV sounds like birds chirping. it seems as if my car upgrades itself :/

Shift at around 3,000RPM at WOT through First-Second-Third Gear, and you should hear the Turbocharger and Diverter Valve quite nicely... Drive through a parking garage if it's too noisey out. It also helps to put your windows down, and sunroof open. 
You may want to considering building a Boost Pressure Tester as well... I have one of all of my Turbocharged cars.
