Default 18" RIMS PERFORMANCE

Hi all ..... I just installed a 18" RO JA set of rims with 225/40/18 tires. I used to have 16" 205/50/16...

anyhow, the 18" rims are making my ride super bumpy. On top ...i feel the steering wheel shake a bit.. also .Braking is harder now...and my acceleration is slower.

What gives ? Is it cuz my rims are too heavy and big ?

thanks..

Well I'm about to do the samething for my b6. I'll be going from 16" stock rims to 18" RS4 reps. I hope I don't have any issues like you are having.

Most likely is cuz your rims and so heave and porbably cuz you have a lower series set of tires, i mean what can you expect going from 5 inches of sidewall to like 2 inches

yeah unfortunatley thats just the side effect of big rims
u never rode in a jeep with 20+'s up on it? lol bumpy as all hell!!!!!!!
or a civic with 18's would have to be the worst ride......IMO. sooooooooooooooooooooooo shitty

i didn't have those problems going from 16's to 18's, do you have hubcentric's on the new wheels,i had vibrating until i did that.

Ok Ill make this short.

1. bumpy= low profile tires, no give in the sidewall will cause this.

2. loss of performance= higher final gearing due to taller longer tires. This affects the speedo gauge as well as gearing performance. The rotational distance rasies the gear as will shorter/smaller tires will slightly lower the gearing. ALso they mostlike do wiegh more and will take more power to turn vs. stock. This is two fold affect with the braking. The car now has to stop heavier wheels, but the also has to stop more rotation as well.

Now the extra wieght does affect things but the rotation distance and gearing changes are the most influential of your current state. Thats why I dont recomend big wheels.

Try turning a tall gear with a short gear, then switch to a big gear turning a small gear...the difference will amaze you.

The harsher ride is normal for lower profile tires. However the vibration is not. Get your wheels rebalanced. Check your tire pressure.

And might want to look into an alignment. If the width of your wheel (rim) has changed, any camber problems will be amplified with the bigger wheel, so issues you might not have noticed on the 16's may show up on the 18's.

I wouldnt switch man, just get more power and throw some different springs on there..... 18's look way better than 17s imo
