they might be talking in kilometers rather than miles?? 120,000 kilometers = 74, 564 miles

I dont understand why you would ask the dealer a question like that. Dealers want you to buy a new car, they dont want us to keep old models on the road forever.

so i call the dealer just out of no where to findout when to change my timingbelt. i asked the service at what milage do you guys change the timing belt for 2001 audi a4 1.8t quattro, he said 120k, i asked him is that the stock timing belt? he said yes, was he bullshttin or what? this is cherry hill audi by the way in nj and i know not to take my car to the dealer but i am confused that he told me they change it on 120k

The belts on these cars dont really wear that bad. It was the tensioner on earlier models that broke, not the belt, and thats why everyone freaks out about the t-belt change. Honestly, when I changed mine at 85k on my 97, the belt looked fine, no cracks, or worn teeth or anything. The tensioner was broken though.
So, you may want to do it a little earlier like 100k or so, but I wouldnt worry about the belt holding up. And your model has an updated tensioner design.

I checked all 3 manuals at the bently web site, for 2000, 2001, and 2002, they all indicate 105k miles, or 170k kilometers.

yeah - they say 105k if you drive a 2.8 or a 2.7t and then 120k if you drive a 1.8t
scroll down to the bottom of the page and check the ** and ***

and no they are not talking 120k km - is says 120k miles/192k km
but yeah - don't trust them on this one

*ding! the belt is good for probably 150+K. audi would have to admit a problem with the tensionerin order to tellus anything other than what the belt is good for, that is why you will never see any official publications showing TB& tensioner at 60K, (which is why i would never ask a dealer a question like this.)

The 2001 A4 came with the updated TB tensioner and is good for more than 60 to 70k miles. The dealer service rep is not giving you a lineof BS. I have a 2001 and I can verify that the01A4 has theupdated tensioner. The old style tensioner is indeed what led to the 60 - 70k TB replacement rule.

Even with the updated tensioner I would not wait to 120K to change the TB. You still have the internal waterpump that has given people problems. Failed watrepumps have led to failed timing belts becuase the waterpump is driven by the timing belt. The failed waterpump siezes up and breaks the teeth off the TB. When you replace the TB make sure you replace the waterpump.

Hmm.. interesting thread. When I bought my car, it had no service records, and it was at 94K miles, so I just took a chance and bought it. After buying it, I brought it in to an Audi mechanic and he told me that the timing belt looked pretty new and did not need replacing yet. So I figured the previous owner must have changed it at the recommended mileage of 70K or so. But maybe he/she didn't change it at all - maybe the original timing belt looks good after 95K miles because of the updated tensioner in the 2001. I was going to change the timing belt at 120K again anyway (60x2), but now I'm getting nervous about changing it that late in the case that it's still the original belt. What do you guys think?

im in a similar spot,butmy dealer hadmaintinence records from previous owner, just not for the TB. they told me it looksfine, and sent me off. 20k later i cant standnot knowing for myselfand decided to just do it along with the tensioner ect.

Prevention 1000% > cure
