Default 1.9 TDi Smoky Exhaust

Hi,

wonder if anyone can throw a light over what is causing the excessive black smoking from my exhaust on a 1997 1.9 TDi?

I have been noticing a steady drop in power especially uphill and if the car is made to work in a higher gear, this results in a mass of Black Smoke from the back!!

On the flat with no load it is fine, but put ya foot down and out come Greenpeace waving their banners

All the filters air / fuel / oil etc have been changed & obviously fuel consumption is higher than normal.

Maybe have to end up at the Audi dealers to put it on the Vag-Com ??

However, just wondered if there was anything else I could try before emptying my pockets at the garage?

Cheers

Are you burning excessive amounts of oil?

I hate to redirect a new member, but the Audi TDI isn't imported into the US, so most of us don't have much experience with deisel engines. You might want to check the VW forums where the TDI is imported here.

Dpeending if your greeting was an Australian or UK "cheers" you may be able to find someone with a vagcom who will allow you to use it. The cost is usually beer.

Check this link for the vagcom locator.

I had an A3 tdi 130 but superchipped it! What a monster. It really had some serious power! It would wheelspin in 4th if you never had the traction control on, and even then the tc light was lickering on constantly!!
No idea what would make it bellow black smoke. Could be anything from a turbo, to burning oil. Does it still have the same power from before the smoke came? If not, then it could well be a turbo. I'm not really up with deisels though, so best go and ask at a professional place...

Update on the problem.

I took the car to a local VAG-COM garage where they discovered that the problem was caused by a split Turbo pipe and after taking a trip to the Audi spares dept (and £50 later) the problem was solved!

No more black smoke & turbo restored to full power......

Thanks to all who tried to help

Regards

Tell me more about the tdi... I loved the power of mine! What engine is it> 115, 130, or the 150? My 130 had a superchip lobbed in it, and a magnex exhaust. The power was amazing for a diesel. Used to wheelspin in 4th!
