02 1.8T exhaust rattle/transmission noise?
How's it going? Looks like you guys have a good forum here! To introduce myself, I learned to drive on a 4000 CS, and now have a z06 street/race car, a range rover DD, and an M3 that is probably going to be a LS1 powered dedicated track car in the next year or so.
I'm not an Audi owner, but have a friend with an 2002 A4 1.8T w/ 60k on the clock that asked me for help.
When his car gets hot, and only when it gets hot, he gets a slight clacking/rattling right on the tail end of his clutch engagement. It is only audible with the windows down and he can only hear it when at a stop.
To me, it sounds like an exhaust rattle more than a transmission issue, but I want to make sure I'm steering him in the right direction. It only rattles for half a second or so, and it happens just as the clutch is fully engaging (IE not slipping anymore). Is this a known issue on the A4s? Is there a hanger that could be making the noise? Is a transmission rattle a known issue? The car is a 1 owner car, 60k on it, and never beat on. The car is quiet at a stop both with the clutch engaged and disengaged, so I think I can rule out pilot bearing and throwout bearing...
Thanks in advance for the help guys!
