***please help!!! 1996 1.8 a4 immobiliser problem***
watcha people
got an immobiliser problem with the audi, it happens as soon as the car fires up. within 2-3seconds it cuts out. i'm using original key etc but was wondering is this a common problem and has anybody on here had to deal with it?
if yes, how did you sort the problem?
cheers

You don't have an engine immobilizer. That's on the 2000+ Audi's. If you were having a problem with an engine immobilizer, the car wouldn't start, not start and die. You could be having fuel or air intake issues.

Bren
Check out my thread ! Seems like you need to get the dealership to reset the immobiliser.
Cyber My 96 has an immobiliser too and has been doing the same thing, though it progressed to not running at all.

watcha campers!
right, just to give you all an update
i replaced the reader coil wire and the ignition switch. by the time i had done this i had got to know the local audi Chief engineer via many phone calls and trips downto the local dealership.i then took it down to him and he reprogrammed the key and reset the ecu to match it all up with the immobiliser etc.
it now runs like a dream and starts first time, every time.
the only problem now is the fact that it leaks power steering fluid from the steering rack, has anybody ever had this happen to them? (should i start a new thread about this though as its a seperate problem? admins???)

Europeans do. US models got immobilizers in 02. Which is why there are so many stolen B5's.

RE: ***please help!!! 1996 1.8 a4 immobiliser problem***
Hi people....
I have had this probem with my 2nd audi now, but only this weekend fixed it in my garden and without incurring any costs!!!! I have been going round the bend trying to find a solution - and now that i have, i felt i had to let the users of this forum know..I just hope that this issue resolves all those audi owners who have this same problem.
Under the steering wheel, it is possible to take off the case (including the cover above the steering wheel too) this involves a couple of philips screw heads and 2 star screw heads. Once the covers are removed, you will see the ignition barrel which the key fits into. There are 2 plugs which should be immediately visible on the barrel, one yellow and larger, and the other black and smaller. I found that when pushing the smaller black plug it moved by several mm and made a clicking noise - hence proved that a loose connection existed. To prove this further, i unplugged it - and the immobiliser light kept flashing (hence no start), but upon replugging it securely and putting in the key and turning it, the immobiliser light did not flash at all - and the car started straight away afters days of not starting, and since then, it has NOT let me down :-)
This was a easy and simple resolve, and I hope it helps.
Regards,
Shahdil.
