it could be a lot of things unfortunately, the rough idle usually is fixed with the cleaning of the throttle body though..

First I'd go to a local auto parts store to get your codes read if your parts stores do that(they do for free in Seattle). I've heard of temp sensors, oxygen sensors and clogged pcv valves/systems also causing roughness. Those sensors can be checked with multimeters, theoretically I wonder if a shorted out throttle position sensor resistor element could cause a rough idle/misfire? Throttle position sensors can be a quick multimeter test as well.

Ok.. a vaccum leak = LEAN, but I would check for leaks anyway.

I would say its the ICM though, alot of people have had problems with them.

If you have no codes for the MAF, then that should be ok.

New plugs wires - check
MAF/Throttle cleaned - check
Vaccum Lines - ????
ICM - ?????

I would look at those 2 items

ORIGINAL: brent07

yeah it will flucuate between 4-7 for an initial 2 sec then smooth out usally and the maybe move a lil bit again every so often if i let it idle ... often idleing will cause the check engine to start to blink ....
when your CEL turns on, you have a minor problem...when your CEL starts to blink, TURN YOUR CAR OFF! a blinking CEL means something is very wrong. small things like vacuum leaks and failing MAFs will not cause the CEL to blink like that..the blink is a sign of a more serious problem.

Its not, but thats what the ICM looks like.

On a 1.8T this is like a 5minute job.. not sure on the 2.8.. but Im sure its fairly easy to do

I just replaced my ICM a few weeks ago...EXACT same problem. Got mine shipped for $80 off ebay...get the HUCO brand for the cheapest. I read good reviews of them on AZ and mine has been working so far. I ordered it on Wednesday, was here on Friday and installed in 3 min.
