Audi A3 electrical problem
Hi, I have a problem with my Audi A3 sport and want to know if anyone else has experianced these problems or knows of what could be causing them? I seam to have a serious drain on my battery and after 24 hours of not being started it will not start unless i use my battery booster! I have had all the usuall checks carried out and have had two new batterys fitted and nothing has worked! I have been told that it is the computer which is on the dash which is causing the problem but i am not to sure of this and dont want to buy a new one and have it fitted if its not going to solve the problem.
If anyone could answer my question and solve my problem it would be much appreciated.
Regards,
Adam.

RE: Audi A3 electrical problem
It sounds odd that the onboard computer can drain a battery in 24hrs. These batterys are probably rated at 300CCA and 20AH. I doubt that the onboard computer draws more than a few mA, but then I'm not a mechanic.
You could have the onboard computer disabled, to check that it really is that, which is the problem.

RE: Audi A3 electrical problem
so you did a voltage drop test on the battery to determine if you had a bad ground from the battery??, is the ground to the chassis in good condition and not corroded??, does the radio go off when the ignition is turned off??, have you fitted an aftermarket AMP and is it connected to a permanent live??,
these are the most common faults but I doubt the on board computer screen would drain the battery in 24 hrs so I would say bad ground

RE: Audi A3 electrical problem
Yeh i have carried out a voltage drop on the battery and have had all the earth points on the car checked aswell. The radio also goes off with the car's ignition and there is no after market amp fitted. Completly baffled as to what the problem is so hopefully someone can throw a bit of light onto the matter.

RE: Audi A3 electrical problem
1 common fault with any hatchback is the wiring to the rear door because its switch related and works on opening and shutting, sometimes the switch or contact gets wet and shorts out or the switch gets dislodged and shorts out to ground so worth taking a look at that

a3 Battery drain / Management panel
Hi
We have just hit the same problem
The central control panel between the speedo and the rev counter went blank yet the management system was working perfectly as per local diagmostic check.
Then the battery started to drain and after 4/5 weeks I took the car into Audi Edinburgh who said that they couldn't find anything wrong - so it had toi be the control panel at £350 with labour arround £650.00. They then wanted the car to do a 2/3 day battery drain test and this would be arround £400 debending on what was at fault.
The car was not left and at the garage and next day after an overnight charge the car started in tyhe mornibng to go to work but didn't start to go home.
On jump starting this evening the control panel is now fuctioning again Therefore it IS working ok so Audi are talking rubbish even after the diagnostic and I've no confidence that they know what they are talking about.
We also need help for the same problem.

battery and other
Hi there
All things that can possibly go wrong with a car has gone wrong with mine..
I purchased a 2004 Audi A3 2.0 Fsi ambition about 4 years ago and since then its been nothing but a horrific nightmare!!
The first problem started on 38*** km's where i had to replace the aircon compresor (about R15000+-)... luckely it was still under warrenty. Then at 46***km's my electric fan gave in (even with the ignition turned off the fan still ran without stopping, draining my battery completely)
Then within the last two years the following happened..
April 2008 my car went in for a 120000 km service where they were suppose to check the cambelt (toothed belt) etc.etc and then later that same day on my way to polokwane (300km later) my cambelt snapped, bending all my valves and ultimately seizing the engin itself. At that time i was allready out of my maintenance plan and spent 3 months fighting with Audi SA till eventually i nailed them on pre-mature toothedbelt failure (cambelt is to be changed on 180000km service) and they replaced my complete engin with a new one (+-R80000). To my disgust, three months later, the bolt holding the pulley of the cambelt in place, broke, and i once again had sleepless nights fighting with audi to replace my engin again! Eventualy, after 8 months, they replaced the engin, and i got my car back.
At this point in time i'm so frustrated because recently my aircon compresor gave in for the second time and i'm experiencing a voltage draining problem on my battery. I took my car to an auto electrician where he told me that it could be the regulator of the altenator, the altenator itself, or a tracker unit that has been installed and the battery of the tracker is draining power from the car battery.
Talking about car problems... i've had it all...

Electrical problems
Hi
I know it's been a while since anyone replied on this but my friends car has started to have the same electrical problems too.
Has anyone discovered what was wrong and is there a quick and hopefully inexpensive fix.
The car is 2.0 tdi 2006 A3 sport.
Much apprecaited.
