A3 Whistling/whining noise (bad PCV valve?)
2008 A3 2.0T
A couple days ago, a loud whistling/whining noise (like a bad belt) starting coming from my engine bay. It goes away under throttle but returns once I let off it and at idle. It gets more pronounced as the engine warms up.
I took it into a shop today to get it looked at and the tech said the belts were fine so must be an air/vacuum/boost leak or something. While he was checking it out more I did some googling and came across similar reports that indicated the PCV valve was bad. They said try to remove the oil cap with the engine running and if it's stuck on, then bad PCV valve.
I told the tech and he couldn't pull it off. Then I got charged $80. Cool
So, first, does this sound like a bad PCV valve?
Second, if so, then how easy is this job. I could really find a good DIY. Is this what I need? Audi A3 FWD 2.0T > Engine > Emission > ES#8209 Breather Update Kit - 06F198202
I also read about some catch can replacement? I just want the most reliable solution with minimal maintenance. Or should I just let the shop do this?

Hi Ipso,
Same thing happened to me with the whistling it was the a bad PCV valve as you have diagnosed.
Mine was replaced under warranty, are you out of warranty?
I don't think you need either the catch can or the ECS retrofit kit, the PCV has been through several iterations and the factory part is more stout than it was originally.
Here is a lot of good information: OOOO-A3: PCV Replacement and Eurojet Valve

Exactly how loud is this whistling? Mine seems to be louder than normal too. I can hear it whistling a little with the windows closed, but I've never had a turbocharged car before. I used to drive a Chevy Malibu which was super quiet.
So, could my concern just be the turbo sound?
