Default Thinking of buying an '01 Allroad

I found what I think is a great deal on a car that I have always loved but not been able to afford.
This car is at a dealership and they are asking $8600. It has 120k on it, so that leads me to my main question, how are audi's when they have high mileage?

Here's a link to the ad on CL http://portland.craigslist.org/clc/car/640916774.html

And here's a picture just for the heck of it!

We have around 60 on ours also, have been told by others motor goes foever. We havent had issues there, but got bit by suspension leaking which burned out the pump so I would suggest look for leaks, and check it from the NADA guide which most banks use but it sounds like a good deal

I own an 01' with 121k on it, besides the basics, ie: timing belt at 110k, 120k check up and maintance 800 bucks, I also had to replace the suspention pump at 120k due to a leak..runs a cool 1k. Also, cluster computer screan may go before long (is normal from what i gather), also 1k, unless you finda used one which runs 50-500. Don't get me wrong, I love my AR more than I have most of my past cars. But repairs and routine maintance arn't the same as my Nissan was. It's only a bargain if your $8600 doesn't entail 4k in maintenace in the next year. Ahhh, the joys of the unknown. But all that aside. The upside is awesome. I love the car. It is all you think it will be, and more. Good Luck! PS. do a car fax too.

I also love my allroad but things are starting to add up. I've had it about 8 months now and both turbos had to be replaced $4000(covered under warranty, thank god!) and now i have three air bags that went bad in one day?????? Not covered under warranty. About $2400 to fix. The buttons on the driver side door (the motion alarm dissarm and the trunk release) those just decided to fall out and are broken and once again not covered. Not a big deal but should this really happen???
So my advise to you is make sure you have a great warranty for the car. Some warranty places cover the air bags, so i'm told. Make sure the warranty place says that they cover them. I was told my warranty covers those by the dealer, they say they don't and it's just not written well in the contract.

Thinker,

I've had my car (an '04 with low miles) since December, and I love it. Enough so that I'm thinking of spending some money on mods before it starts needing out-of-warrantee repairs.

That said, the most repeated issue I've seen on these boards is air suspension. The rubber air bags form leaks, and the apparently wimpy air compressor gives up the ghost if called upon to do more than average work.

This brings up two points: 1) since the bags tend to give out, is there some form of maintenance we should be performing, like spraying them with olive oil or something? 2) couldn't we spray in something like a flat tire sealant to fix them? Okay, three points...3) is it better to leave the suspension in one spot most of the time, or to move it around so creases don't form in the bags?

If possible, I would like one of the techs on this forum to weigh in on the subject, because I would rather not spend money on expensive rubber bags for my car.

That all said, I absolutely love my car. Luxurious, handles as well as you can expect, and can jack up a few inches to get through standing water and snow that stops SUVs.

Cheers,

john

My experience on this and other forums is that you tend to hear of a lot more problems since this is where people come to get answers. The silent masses with no problems rarely show up. I have a 2004 2.7T Allroad with 70k that has had zero problems beyond a noisy secondary air pump. I use it hard carrying bikes, kayaks, canoes, skis, camping gear, etc on and off road. No problems with turbos or air suspension or anything else for that matter. The key with any German car (especially true of my Porsches) is that you absolutely must keep driving it. Adding stratospheric numbers of miles doesn't seem to hurt the car one bit. Leave it sitting in the garage and you'll soon have lots of problems.
