Need CV joint advise
Does anyone have any expereince with allroad cv joints? I recently had some service done at local dealer and had then check out slight/inconsistant noise. They saidboth cv joints need replacing. Estimated to be $1200. Its an '03 with 68k miles on it, which seems early for cv joints (from my experience) and seems odd that both are shot. Another local independent shop says they would "repack or grease" them or replace them if needed, again estimated at $1200. Anyone else out there have this problem? Does anyone recommend not doing this at the dealer and seeing if the indpt shop might be a cheaper fix (not my prefered method).

RE: Need CV joint advise
The dealer believe it or not is gonna be cheaper here. I have "NEVER" replaced a cv joint on any audi! They are bullet proof as far as im concerned. Ive seen people running around with torn boots for years and have all kinds of clicking noises and such, all i ever have to do is replace the boot and grease up the joint and its good to go, no noise. The boot repair kits are around $70-$80 bucks each and around 2 hours labor for eash cv axle. It shouldn't be over $800.

RE: Need CV joint advise
I had a thump-thump-thump noise from the front end in April. I thought it was a wheel out of balance. Dealer thought I needed a new transmission. Since it was under warranty (26000 mi), I said go ahead. A week later the dealer called and said that AR4.2 also needed a new right front axle. It seemed to fix the problem, until a couple weeks ago. Same noise came back. Dealer said I needed a left front axle. The AR is working fine now.... for the time being.
