Default Audi 80 radiator fan doesnt turn on

I have checked the fuse and all is well there, I was just wondering if someone could point me in the right direction to pin point the problem im having. The fan just doesnt turn on, and the car gets hot, and will over heat if in traffic or sitting for too long of time. Thanks

Try jumping the relay, if the fan turns on, it could be a bad relay or a defective thermo switch.

I am not familiar with the 80 series but I would suspect that the relay panel is somewhere under the hood next to the firewall. The cooling fan system is somewhat similar on the 4000S and 1CQ so it should be similar on the 80 as well. First does the fan spin if you turn it by hand, if it does you can try jumping the relay if it is stuck don’t even think about it. Jumping the relay is somewhat tricky and I would recommend that someone who is more knowledgeable do this. The relay has four prongs, two are the coil and two are the switching contacts. The terminals will be numbered 30, 85, 86, 87 or maybe even 87a. You will need to make a short "jumper" made out of two .25" male blade connectors and 12 or 14 gauge wire. You want to inset the jumpers across the switching contacts on the relay socket. I believe these are numbered 30 and 87 or 30 and 87a, the fan should turn on right away even with the ignition off. The fan draws a lot of current so some arcing will be present when you insert and remove the jumper. If doesn't turn on try it with the ignition on, if it still doesn’t turn on then the problem will need further troubleshooting. It could be the fan.

Figured out the problem, and man do i feel stupid. Turns out I just didnt have the wire harness connected completely to the fan. I thought i would check the connection to the wireharness, and noticed that it just came off with ease, after connecting it firmly, I turned on the car and put the ac on to see if the fan would engage and it did. One more problem down. Still a few more to go.....
