so fist of all my s4 is a 2001.5 and has 122k everything worked great until a month ago... while accelerating there was a thunk, it then went into limp mode (stuck in 4th and all gears illuminated). i parked it and didn't touch it until i found a VAG i could use heres the results.

so im guessing the speed signal is making it crazy ang throing it in limp mode? any ideas on how to check this G182?

Auto trans probelms can be hard to diagnose, so patience and research are important.
The electronic sensors associated with the auto trans can be logged with a vagcom by going to the auto trans module and examining the measuring blocks. Go through the first 10 or so measuring blocks and you should see blocks called multifuntion switch, speed sensor etc. Check the behavior of these values and compare them to expected results. I have some of the Bently manual procedures for checking the trans, if you cannot find anything yourself.
ANother option would be to flush and change the trans fluid and filter. The trans function depends heavily on the fuid level and quality. Although, I dont think bad fluid would throw the codes that you have encountered.

yes they can be difficult, i would like the procedures if its not too much trouble. i just need to dive in and get a vag com... my email is m_winters714@yahoo.com. i don't believe that the flush / fluid change will help b cause i had a similar problem and it was done with no change to the problem.
heres my update
i have tried a different TCM.
the front plug on the trans had some water in it cleaned and dry now.
no trouble codes as of now and no MIL light either.
reverse still acts like neutral, reverse lights work.
D puts it in 5th i believe, and tip puts it in 4 or 5 but you can shift it as low as 2nd...
1 more update, it seems the brake safety switch to put it in other gears clicks on for just a sec when the car is turned to on position then it clicks off completely.

Yeah you need a vag com to check out measuring blocks. The TCM will put the trans in 3rd gear permanentely to "limp" the car home when its in limp mode. It does sound like your TR switch is faulty though.

so final update the large plug in front had some water deposits in it cleaned with contact cleaner and zip tied the boot, after it was still broken.
i also removed the shifter and other pieces to clean and check for the magnets, not sure how but i got the brake shift lock device to function properly.
i just got everything back together and the trans functions perfectly.

I had the same thing happen to me in my A4 and i dont know what to do.
he said he had just had a flood down where he was and the plugs were filled with water. I then thought I had hosed down my engine bay the day i had the issue. So i did the same thing. Went and got contact cleaner for harnesses and sprayed them out of any water. Sprayed some canned air up into the harneses and finally spray some lubricant into the harnesses. Plugged a new brake light sensor in and it didnt to anything. Still illuminated shifting lights and im almost about to give up. I dont know what else to do. Any suggestions?

Hi everyone im new to the site but a long time audi fan, ever since I was a kid and they were the Olympic car to me lol, long story short I have owned 3 audi to date, 1st 1 was 1998.5 a6 2.8 then when I met my wife I talked her into buying a 98 a4 2.8 both cars where great. I decided to sell them and get a suv and a 2001 2.7 s4 automatic recently. But I have been having issues with it, when im driving normal and slow the cars switches gears great, but when I try and accelerate quickly it feels like its slipping and revs are up speed is not. My tip tronic doesn't work as well and my gauge doesn't tell me what gear its in, its all red. Im going to bring my car to the mechanics again and change the tranny fluid and filter, I recently changed the altenator, belt, coils and spark plugs 1200$ later. Is there anyone that can give me some insight on what may be wrong ???
Best regards Bryan
